a labourer aged 26 was sentenced in March 1785 at Chelmsford to be hanged for stealing from Fleetwood Bury Esq., his ruffled shirt, neckcloth, leather breeches, wig, stuff bag, leather boot garter, 15s and half a guinea. Abraham was reprieved on condition of tranpsortation to Africa for seven years and sent to the hulks in June 1786. As no site suitable for penal colony could be found in Africa, the transportation order was altered to Botany Bay and Abraham arrived on the Scarborough. In March 1789 he was sent to Norfolk Island where he remained until 1796.
