son of the Reverend Butler, sailed on the Sirius as ship's boy. He was a cousin of midshipman Daniel Southwell of the Supply. Southwell described him as 'quite a clever little tar... grows fast a fine lad'. He returned to England on the Prince of Wales in 1788. His drawings of fish were included in The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay, 1789.
