arrived on the Sirius as a marine private. In April 1790 he was working as personal
servant to Major Ross on Norfolk Island, but was
dismissed for stealing his rum. It was a precious commodity, and this consignment was doubly
previous as Ross had managed to save it from the wreck of the Sirius. Clark noted that
Arscott had 'repayed the major for the confidence as all rascals repay good masters'.
